The Kakariki
|
Kakarikis are native to New Zealand. They are a highly energetic
and fun loving bird, full of curiosity. They love to hide and
are the best at finding hidey-holes. You open a closet and watch
those little eyes light up! Because they are a highly energized
bird they eat LOTS! One could even go as far as affectionately calling
them "garbage cans" of the bird world. If it is
edible, they will eat it.
Kakarikis are also one of the most acrobatic flyers going. They
love to fly! They can head straight for the wall and within
inches of it summersault and come right back at you. Under
tables, through legs, high, low, up, down and all around.... they can
do it all. They are wondrous to watch. Because of their
love of flying it is sometimes said to clip a Kakarikis wings is so
sad to this bird that it can become somewhat depressed. I have
no evidence to back this up but to have a safe place for a Kak
to fly and see him happy..... well you decide.
These go getters are a perfect apartment pets as they are not loud and
have the most infectious "laugh call". You cannot help
but be happy with a kakariki about. One word of caution though.
These birds need lots of climbing room, cages with bars. They
love to climb! Also paper can be turned into instant confetti so
don't leave any valuable books or documents about for them.
Another thing about "Kaks" as they are lovingly referred to,
is that they do not like to be handled. Don't get me wrong!
They enjoy being with you but they would prefer not to be cuddled.
So if you are desperately seeking that in your new bird as a pet, best
skip the Kakariki.
