Green Cheek Conure Profile
|
|
Green-cheek conures are the most
common of the Pyrrhuras in captivity. They weigh about 70 grams and are 9-10
inches. These cuddly conures
make great first time pets; as handfed babies they are easy to handle, love
your attention and have the personality of a big bird in a little body.
Conures have a reputation for being noisy, but the Pyrrhura green-cheeks are
the quieter conures, making them wonderful pets for apartments and condos.
Personally, I find them to be quieter than cockatiels and lovebirds.
Each bird is an individual, some will call to their owners all the time, and
some hardly make any noise at all.
Green-cheek conures have a lot of personality, are very active,
smart and inquisitive. Lots of time out of the cage is a must, even if they
are only hanging out on a play stand in the same room with you. As with all
birds, they should be closely supervised when they are exploring outside of
their cages. Interacting with them is great—they love to have their heads
scratched and cuddle, and their funny antics laying on their backs playing
or hanging upside down in their cages will make you laugh. Conures are very
social birds, affectionate and attention loving, but they can also entertain
themselves for hours. They love to play with toys. Leather and wooden toys
are a must, as they love to chew.
Green-cheeks are not great talkers,
but can speak a few words or phrases, and are good at mimicking sounds. They
are smart birds, and if you talk to them in context they often learn to
speak in context, greeting you with “hello” and telling you “night-night”
before you go to bed.
The Yellowsided Conures are the same
size and have the same personality and traits. The only difference between
the two is the beautiful yellow on the sides of the body and the bright red
on the front of the body.
