Parrotlets Profile
|
| Parrotlets are one of the smallest know
parrots in the world. They have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. They make
wonderful companions and have all the same general characteristics of the
larger parrots. Expect for their quiet voice, which makes them perfect for
apartment or condo pets. Parrotlets are capable of intense loyalty, love
and friendship. Full of intelligence, curiosity and acrobatic energy. They
love to come out and play with you or entertain themselves (and you) in
their cage swinging, climbing and chewing on leather toys.
The Pacific or Celestial Parrotlet is the most well-known and popular
species of parrotlets. They are about 5 inches in length and weigh 30
grams. Both males and females are a basic olive green. The males have a
cobalt-blue streak of feathers extending from the eye as well as cobalt
blue on the rump and wings. Females have an emerald green eye streak and
dark olive green rumps and wings. Parrotlets are sexually dimorphic. Which
means that the sex of the bird can easily be identified visually. Which
makes pairing birds easy and does not require surgical or genetic sexing.
There are many mutations which include Blues, Lutino, Whites and Pastels.
Parrotlets are quickly becoming one of the most sought after pet with
their outgoing personalities, adorable-size, colourful plumage, comical
behavior and quite voice. They are hardy birds and are easy to care for.
