Avian Publications - Bird Books and Videos

Bird Sitter by Steve Hartman & Steve Cantin - Birds normally frequently communicate with the flock because they are constantly socializing and looking for predators. Just think about all the bird chatter you can constantly hear in your backyard. Birds' brains are designed for constant communication -- something humans are not able to supply. This DVD will give your pet bird the opportunity to experience life in a flock, the way parrots were meant to live. The video exposes then to the sights and sounds of hundreds of parrots engaging in everyday life in a flock, giving your bird constant mental stimulus and making him or her happier and healthier. Now your bird will never have to be home alone! The Bird Sitter video also works great for helping escaped parrots find their way home.

Captive Foraging: The Next Best Thing to Being Free by Dr. M. Scott Echols - This innovative DVD is destined to change the way caretakers view their captive birds. Based on the model of the natural foraging instinct of all animals, author and videographer Dr. Scott Echols introduces the concept of including a foraging tree in a bird's enclosure for environmental enrichment. The video describes how a foraging tree can potentially reduce the incidence of unwanted behaviors in captive birds. Also included are step-by-step directions on how to use a foraging tree as well as safe foraging toys for birds. A separate Special Feature details scientific information about the bird species included in the program. Topics covered include understanding the natural foraging instinct of all animals; preventing unwanted behaviors, such as feather destruction and repetitive functionless activity; build a foraging tree for captive birds; and creating foraging toys -- from basic to advanced -- to keep birds occupied and happy. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to qualified avian research projects selected by the author.

Stalking the Wild Amazons (DVD) by Michael Schindlinger - This up-close and personal video puts you in touch more closely than ever before with the lives of wild Amazon parrots, as they laugh, love, live, and grow. Three years of fieldwork went into this first-hand look at these marvelous, intelligent parrots in their own element, in their own way, and in their own voice. You'll go down a hollow tree into the nest, and watch as parents care for their nestlings. You'll come to know them and the animals and birds who share their environment, on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Only by coming to know them as they live naturally will we come to value and conserve these unique species who share so much with us. Understanding the lives of wild parrots is the first step in ensuring their continued survival. The proceeds from the sale of this video will help ensure the continuation of ongoing parrot research into their lives and languages.

Teach Your Parrot Series (1): Fantastic Performing Parrots (DVD) by Tani Robar - A must-see for parrot lovers, this is one of the most amazing bird trick DVDs ever produced! For the first time you can see the secrets of professional bird show tricks. Many of these are original, never before seen tricks with Tani and her birds and all are tricks you can teach your own bird. DVD 1 features five performing parrots. This DVD presents a lively and entertaining display of bird tricks, many of which are original. Adding to the entertainment are the distinct personalities of each parrot. Poopsie, a green-cheeked conure, is the smallest and also the oldest of the five. She does the most complicated tricks. Squawk, a blue-crowned conure, actually holds a conversation with Tani, and is probably the most talented of the group. Cassie is a black-headed caique. She is the clown of the show. DVD I also introduces Kiri, an African grey and Prince, a crimson-winged parakeet.

Where the Wild Greys Are: A Day in the Life of Africa's Grey Parrots by Diana May & Valerie Hovetter - For hundreds of years, African Grey parrots have been trapped and exported from West Africa to be kept as pets in Europe and elsewhere, leading to potential extinction in the wild. This video from the World Parrot Trust includes some of the first sound scientific information about the African Grey parrot lifestyle in the wild and the risks of trapping them for the pet trade. The World Parrot Trust is vehemently opposed to the trapping of any bird in the wild, and is conducting a campaign to ask the European Union to bring a total ban on the importation of birds. A portion of sale proceeds will help fund this campaign.
